i was told in graduate school that i was being prepared for a career as a "psychological counselor." The degree i earned in that program, EdM, doesn't reflect the training in psychology and seems to imply (misleadingly) that i've been trained in education. But if i describe myself as a counselor, people think of high school guidance counselors, not mental health professionals. Overall, it has not been a very "marketable" degree.
People who know what it is that i do, which i've often described as "psychotherapy" because i use such techniques as hypnosis and neurolinguistic programming, jump to the mistaken conclusion that i'm a psychologist. Ownership of that title is trademarked for PhDs by the American Psychological Association. With "only" an EdM, i can't be a psychologist, i can only be a pzykr. Which is kinda fun, 'cause it sounds a little crazy, doesn't it?
